The Porsche 944, produced from 1982 to 1991, is a highly acclaimed front-engine sports car that evolved from the 924. Its design features a sleek, wedge-shaped form with strong flared fenders, which improves aerodynamics. The 944 was equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine, half of the V8 found in the 928. In 1985, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo (also known as the 951), which included a turbocharger. Subsequent models, such as the 944 S and 944 S2, included significant performance upgrades, including a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine, a larger 3.0-liter engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and enhanced suspension and brake systems.
The 944's near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, achieved by placing the transaxle in the back, resulted in superb handling qualities, making it an exciting ride on twisting roads and track courses. The balanced configuration allowed for precise cornering, while finely tuned suspension kept the vehicle stable and responsive. The 944's reputation as one of the best-handling sports cars of its day was reinforced by its precise and engaging steering. Over the years, the 944 has gained stature and value, earning its place as a classic in its own right. Numerous 944s are still enjoyed today, often enhanced with performance mods to keep pace with modern sports cars.
Porsche 944 Mods and Upgrades
Fuel Injectors and Management
Larger fuel injectors and improved management systems, such as independent ECUs, enable more accurate control of fuel and air, unlocking potential benefits when combined with other upgrades.
Bushings and Ball Joints
Polyurethane bushings replace the factory rubber ones, providing increased durability and a stronger feel. Replacing obsolete ball joints with updated models increases steering response and stability.
