What is a Car Oxygen Sensor?

A car oxygen sensor, often referred to as an O2 sensor, monitors the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gases of the engine. It provides feedback to the engine control unit (ECU). Here's what it does:

1. Measures Oxygen Levels

   Oxygen sensors are typically installed in the exhaust system, near the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter. It provides a constant measurement of the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gases as the engine runs.

2. Optimizes Fuel Delivery

   The feedback from the oxygen sensor is crucial for obtaining and maintaining the optimal air-fuel ratio (the proportion of air to fuel) for efficient combustion. The engine may operate in its most fuel-efficient and cleanest state by adjusting the air-fuel mixture, lowering fuel consumption and pollutants.

3. Emission Control

   The sensor also helps reduce dangerous emissions. It reduces pollution by ensuring that the engine runs with a proper air-fuel mixture.
